The Right to Choose

Many people with disabilities need to have supports and services in order to have independent, integrated, and productive lives.

It is a continuous struggle to obtain these services especially in remote or rural areas.  Governmental programs such as Medicaid have programs that support these needs; however, this funding is often earmarked for institutional services rather than Home and Community Based Services.

In 1999, the US Supreme Court affirmed through the Olmstead Act that individuals with developmental disabilities have the right to receive long term care services in an integrated setting.  This means that disabled individuals can continue to live in their own homes and get the services that they need rather than being institutionalized.

Recently, I visited our congressmen on Capital Hill to advocate for more funding which would allow more disabled individuals to have choices in where they live and obtain the services they desperately need. Our core mission at Secure Haven Care is to continually advocate for the implementation of such services while promoting integration, independence, and freedom of choice.
